"So the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he had solemnly promised their ancestors he would give them. When they had taken possession of it, they settled down there. The Lord gave them peace throughout the land, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies had been able to stand against them, because the Lord gave the Israelites the victory over all their enemies. The Lord kept every one of the promises that he had made to the people of Israel" (Jos. 21:43-45).
It is a wonderful comfort and assurance that our loving Father makes breath-taking promises to us that he always keeps! He needn't do it, but he even strengthens his promises with an oath. We are doubly certain of their fulfilment.
We too have been given a spiritual "land" both in the here-and-now and in eternity: the Kingdom of God. Wherever we go we take King Jesus with us! We are to be salt and light and a demonstration of God's love in action.
We too have been given peace. As J B Phillips puts it "Since then it is by faith that we are justified, let us grasp the fact that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:1-2) and He himself is our peace (Eph. 2:14).
We too have been given the victory over death, the world, the flesh and the devil. We have been given authority "to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm" us (Luke 10:19).
All that we have, we have been freely given. We can step out in faith because God's promises never fail. We can withstand all the attacks of the enemy and walk in victory because of these promises. Whatever challenges we are currently facing we are "more than conquerors through him who loved us [enough to die for us]" (Rom. 8:37).
