A number of times John has taken us through the whole range of God's judgements on those who reject Jesus. They all include something of what will happen in the end time and something of what goes on in human history. In Revelation 15:1-16:21 there is a marked stress on finality. These are the last cycle of plagues. Judgement is complete. But opportunities for repentance are given right up to the end. Even as unbelievers are suffering terribly, they curse the name of God; they refuse to repent of their sins, refuse to turn to God and refuse to give him glory. If they did, he would abundantly pardon them. Throughout history there have been terrible atrocities, pandemics and natural disasters. God has allowed them all in the hope that men and women would turn to him and be saved. All day long he holds out his arms to them (Isa. 65:2).
The Jesus of the Gospels, full of compassion and forbearance, has become once more the King of Glory. The age of grace between the incarnation and the second coming has ended. The day of salvation has passed. Now his eyes are like blazing fire; out of his mouth comes a sharp double edged sword; and his face shines like the sun in all its brilliance. Yet he remains a man with the first resurrection body of the new creation.
God's victorious children sing the song of Moses and the Lamb. Moses is not in opposition to Christ; nor the Law to the Gospel. There is harmony and co-operation between them.
"Great and marvellous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty.
Just and true are your ways, King of the nations.
Who will not fear you, Lord, and bring glory to your name?
For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed."
Abraham had asked the Lord: "Will not the Judge and Ruler of all the earth do right?" Of course he will! We can trust him in this. As the seven bowls of God's wrath are poured out, the angel in charge says to the Lord: "You are just in these judgements, O Holy One, who is and who always was".
With all evil combining against God, a call from the Lord Jesus Christ himself rings out: "'Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.' We are then immediately taken back to the judgements. "Then they [demonic spirits] gathered the kings [and their followers] together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon."
This place, which is impossible to identify with certainty, stands as a symbol for the final overthrow of all the forces of evil by Almighty God. However strong these forces may appear, and however hopeless the position of those of good may seem, God will win the victory. In fact it has already been won! What joy to think of the end of all evil and opposition to our wonderful, holy and righteous God!
